The gospel according to Dolly

by Corrie Cabes

You may have an idea of what a faithful life looks like. And, perhaps Dolly Parton isn’t your first thought when it comes to modern day sainthood. Long red nails, big blonde wigs, and dazzling outfits are part of her trademark. It might be an understatement to say that Dolly may be described as over the top with her larger-than-life persona. However, the prolific songwriter has something to say about faithfulness, if you lean in closely.

In a famous Barbara Walters interview in 1977 with Dolly Parton, Walters posed this question: “…do you ever feel like you’re the joke?” Dolly, quickly responded, acknowledging that she’s been laughed at, but with a knowing and confident smile, replied, “the joke’s really on the public.”

There is no joke when it comes to Dolly’s talent and her long career in country music. Dolly manages to draw fans from all across the political and cultural spectrum. Her welcoming spirit has room and respect for everyone. From simple roots, she’s experienced it all; pain and heartbreak, death and resurrection, and breakthroughs of joy. So, what might we take from her spiritual journey, her ups and downs in the music industry, and her important and impactful relationships?

This September, we’ll take a closer look at Dolly Parton with themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, acceptance, and celebration. This is a life of faith that uplifts and inspires. This series will close with a session focused on her music.
